Here is the Year 5 curriculum overview for the second half of this first term.
To support our Year 5 pupils to improve their handwriting we are having a big focus on revising letter formation and joining neatly. Whilst handwriting might seem like a dying skill it is still important for children in their schooling and ensuring that they have a neat, fluent and effective style of handwriting for a range of purposes. Please support your child by ensuring that any written work completed for homework is written neatly, is joined and an appropriate writing tool is used to match the purpose. Children don't learn how to become good at handwriting by just writing as often they can, as this can lead to them just repeating poor letter formation and pen grip. If you would like to complete further work with your child at home on handwriting then please ensure that you sit with them and watch them as they practise; pointing out any areas for development and praise as they go. They should be sat in their chair with their feet on the floor and one hand holding the page. Please check that their pen grip is not too firm or too loose and the fingers are appropriately holding the pen/pencil.
Please refer to the pictures below to show you the pen grip that we encourage at school and the letters that we teach children to join and not to join. If your child has recently joined us at BSAK and already has a fluent, neat handwriting style but joins slightly differently then we will not undo all their learning from another school. As long as the writing is neat, fluent and efficient then this is the outcome we are most concerned with. We had a fantastically ferocious Viking Day today! The children looked amazing and took part in some wonderful Viking activities with great enthusiasm. Have a look at the photos below to see what we got up to today. We have recently explained the BSAK award to all of the children and given them their award books so that they can start collecting credits for their Bronze, Silver and Gold awards. the children need credits to achieve the awards.
